WHO'S CALLING THE SHOTS?

POWER AND AESTHETICS IN CONTEMPORARY OPERA

For our sixth Dialogue, NOD is joining forces with YOST (Y | Opera | Studies Today) to examine not merely the mechanics of commissioning in contemporary opera, but the ideological and economic power relations those mechanics instantiate.

Since opera moved from court to public theater, it has always addressed itself to a public—ideally a large one, given the scale and cost of the work. Yet contemporary opera occupies a peculiar and revealing position: it is simultaneously demanding and constrained, multilayered and costly, complex yet institutionally dependent. Ticket sales, both in the U.S. and Europe, cover only a fraction of production costs; commissioning new works requires a tangled network of private donors, philanthropic foundations, and state support. This is not incidental, but constitutive: the very shape of new opera is determined by the imperatives of funding and patronage.

For those writing opera, these conditions generate unavoidable questions: whose interests are served by our work? What effects do we hope to achieve? Are we accountable to audiences, or to the institutions that pay our salaries? These questions are no longer merely aesthetic; they are political. They become urgent in a context of rising populism, where simplified narratives and ideological pressures destabilize the relationship between culture and democracy.

Over three days, artists, dramaturgs, administrators, and scholars will gather at Yale University to explore these questions, reflecting on how the production and reception of opera articulate social hierarchies and ideological commitments. At a moment when public discourse is increasingly reductive, NOD6 will ask: what role can opera, as a fundamentally interdisciplinary and multimedial art form, play in representing complexity and sustaining utopian possibilities in 2025?

The Dialogue will take place in English.
