Praised by The New York Timesas “a vivid, fearless presence,” mezzo-soprano Adriana Zabala has performed more than forty-five operatic roles across standard, contemporary, and newly commissioned repertoire. She has created roles in seven American operas, including the title roles in Sister Carrie and The Trial of Susan B. Anthony, and appeared as Sister James in Doubt for PBS Great Performances. She earned international acclaim for the title role in Jonathan Dove’s The Adventures of Pinocchio and as the Barbarian Girl in Philip Glass’s Waiting for the Barbarians. Her signature roles include Cherubino, Rosina, Angelina, and Paula in Florencia en el Amazonas.


Zabala has appeared with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Jerusalem Symphony, and at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Wolf Trap. An active educator, she is Associate Professor of Music and Assistant Dean of Collaborative Arts at the Yale School of Music and a former Fulbright Scholar.
