ANDREA MOORE

Associate Professor of Music, Smith College

United States of America

Andrea Moore is a scholar of new classical music, broadly conceived. Her work asks how musical institutions, economies, and ideologies shape what we hear, what we remember, and what we value. A former percussionist and arts administrator, Andrea is especially interested in how new repertoires are shaped, new patron classes emerge, and how new music participates in contemporary discourses of identity. Her recent book, Audible Loss: New Music and the Crisis of Memory(Fordham, 2025) is a major study of how sound and mourning intersect across recent musical memorial cultures, from works responding to the AIDS crisis and 9/11, to those confronting anti-Black violence. Across her research and teaching, Andrea draws together musicology, philosophy, and cultural criticism in confronting the practices and beliefs ofcontemporaryconcert culture.
