MORITZ EGGERT
Composer, Professor of Composition at the University of Music and Theatre Munich, President of the German Composers' Association
Germany

Moritz Eggert, born in Heidelberg in 1965, studied composition in Frankfurt, Munich, and London. His work spans 19 operas, vocal and instrumental pieces, and numerous conceptual and performative projects. Across these forms, Eggert often pushes musical and physical extremes, exploring intensity, virtuosity, and the embodied presence of performers. At the same time, his music challenges the stereotype of “serious” new music: irony, parody, and satire appear frequently, yet he is equally unafraid of emotion, clarity, and melody.
As a writer and long-time contributor to the “Bad Blog of Musick,” Eggert has become a prominent critical voice on cultural and political issues in contemporary music, including #MeToo, gender equality, and power structures within classical institutions.
Among his best-known works are the piano cycle Hämmerklavierand the song cycle Neue Dichter Lieben. Recent projects include the opera Die letzte Verschwörung (Volksoper Vienna, 2023) and Promethea, premiering in 2025.
